Chute is about showing the breadth of opportunity in KC

By 2020, it’s estimated that in the United States, there will be only 400,000 technology graduates for 1.4 million tech jobs. Considering that disparity, it’s not an understatement to say that technology employers – and the communities they’re in – are in a war to attract and retain skilled tech professionals.

Fortunately, Kansas City is well-positioned for talent attraction. This region has more lifestyle assets than ever before, an unprecedented sense of “swagger,” a lot of national attention and a robust technology industry. Talented professionals flock to Kansas City from major markets across the nation.

That being said, according to focus groups at some of our region’s largest tech employers, when an external candidate declines a position in KC, it’s because of a misperception that there is a lack of opportunity in Kansas City – that if one job doesn’t work out, there won’t be another one.

Of course, that is not true. Our most recent statistics say there are approximately 3,500 tech employers in Kansas City, and 600+ are hiring for more than 2,000 open positions.

Still, the misperception is the reality we face; but we have an opportunity to change it. We often say we don’t do a good enough job telling Kansas City’s story. Well, it’s one thing to tell people about Kansas City – it’s another thing to show the diversity and breadth of opportunity for technology professionals in our region.

That’s why we built Chute.

Chute is an online platform that connects external tech professionals to employment in Kansas City. But more than that, it’s a platform to showcase the opportunity that exists here. It’s not a site of job listings; it’s a portal into the offices of KC tech employers, where job-seekers can interact with their culture and learn about the impactful work they’re doing alongside Kansas City lifestyle content.

The more employers on Chute, the stronger the evidence that Kansas City is a leading technology hub in the Midwest. That’s the evidence KCnext will use in an extensive national marketing campaign designed to draw the best and brightest tech talent to our region over the next year.
